Meet Maggie

Maggie Byrd, a Scottish writer and mum of two, has crafted an uplifting and playful story that blends the warmth of family togetherness with key early years learning.

As a parent and teacher, Maggie understands the learning opportunity making things together can create. She has written a hope-filled story to share with younger children about how to brighten a rainy day.   Rainbow Cookies cleverly mixes a heartwarming story with growth and development baked in.

Her gentle tale celebrates the simple joy of baking together. A story that she hopes parents, grandparents, and carers will enjoy sharing with little ones as they name colours, count, sing, and learn the value of ‘not yet!’

When Maggie isn’t in her garden, she’s busy thinking about her next children’s picture book. Watch this space!

My Story

"Writing stories for wee ones comes straight from my heart. Ideas for my picture books have flowered from special memories of when my own girls were little; the happy times we spent (and still do) making things together, baking, painting, crafting or even the love of going to the park.

I love writing stories that inspire getting busy with your hands and the bonus is of course that at the end of it, you either have something yummy to eat, a handmade treasure, or simply creating sweet memories. I also can’t help popping in some elements of learning while I’m at it, it must be the teacher in me. But I know how kids love to join in with counting, colours or repetition.

The best part of creating a picture book is watching the characters come to life under the skillful hands of the illustrator. Seeing what starts as a spark of inspiration finally becomes a thing that you can hold in your hands is a joyful thing!

However, the most wonderful part is imagining the story being read aloud with wee ones. I know how the memories of sharing picture books stay with us long after our children read their own bedtime stories. I’m grateful to imagine being part of that treasured story experience."
